Located in South Surrey, our school serves a vibrant and diverse community that reflects a wide range of cultures, religions, languages, and life experiences. More than 25 languages are spoken within our school community, and for many of our students, English is an additional language. This diversity enriches learning and creates opportunities for students to develop understanding, empathy, and global perspectives. Since opening in October 2024, our school has been focused on building a strong foundation within our new and growing community. By working alongside families, we aim to foster meaningful relationships and a strong sense of belonging that supports student well-being, strengthens community connections, and contributes to positive outcomes for all learners. Our students enjoy coming to school and demonstrate a strong sense of community as they learn, collaborate, and grow together in a variety of ways. We are proud of our welcoming and inclusive environment, where diversity is celebrated and every student is valued. Beyond the classroom, our school community enjoys coming together to connect, celebrate, and have fun, fostering relationships that support both student success and well-being.

Our learners are joyful, energetic, and enthusiastic members of our school community. They enjoy coming to school, building positive relationships with peers and staff, and participating in a wide range of learning experiences. They are curious, collaborative, and eager to engage with others, bringing creativity, kindness, and a sense of community to our classrooms. We are continually inspired by the ways our students learn together, support one another, and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive school environment.

As learners and developing young people, our students are building important social-emotional skills that support both their well-being and academic success. They are learning to identify and understand their emotions, strengthen their ability to self-regulate, and solve problems in peaceful and respectful ways. Through this growth, they are also developing a deeper understanding of who they are and how their unique identities shape their experiences, relationships, and goals. As our students shared, “Identity has a way of lighting the way when you are lost,” and “I am my identity. It is what makes me special.” Their reflections demonstrate a growing sense of self-awareness, resilience, and belonging as they learn that mistakes are opportunities for growth, that every individual has value, and that understanding themselves helps them build meaningful connections with others and contribute positively to their community.

Our staff is committed to supporting students in developing the social-emotional skills they need to thrive both academically and personally. A key focus of our plan is increasing students’ ability to be self-aware, recognize and understand their emotions, and apply strategies to self-regulate so they can learn in a calm, positive, and productive manner. We believe that strong self-regulation skills help students build resilience, make thoughtful decisions, solve conflicts peacefully, and develop meaningful relationships with others.
To support this goal, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) will be intentionally embedded throughout the school year through daily, weekly, monthly, and term-based learning opportunities, as well as ongoing partnerships with families. Students will engage in school-wide SEL programs, literature, classroom discussions, and learning experiences that promote emotional awareness, empathy, and positive relationship-building. Consistent language, shared expectations, daily announcements, assemblies, and school-wide activities will reinforce these important skills across all learning environments. We will also share resources and learning through newsletters and family communication to strengthen home-school connections and support students’ growth beyond the classroom. Through this collective approach, we aim to create a caring, inclusive school community where every student feels connected, supported, and equipped with the skills to succeed.

Throughout the year, students will participate in meaningful SEL learning that builds a strong sense of belonging and connection within the school community. Through collaborative experiences with peers, staff, families, and community members, students will continue to develop the social and emotional skills that help them understand themselves, care for others, navigate challenges, and contribute positively to the world around them.

SEL will help build stronger community connections by creating more opportunities for students and families to engage together throughout the school year. The school is considering adding community centred events, including a winter event in January to address the long gap between October and May. SEL practices will also support greater student interaction by providing opportunities for students to work with peers outside their regular classroom groups, fostering relationships across grade levels and classes. In response to parent feedback, the school plans to incorporate STEM and innovation activities that encourage collaboration. Additionally, integrated afternoon activities will provide students with opportunities to develop social skills, teamwork, and a stronger sense of belonging within the school community. Together, these efforts will promote meaningful connections, engagement, and a positive school culture that extends beyond the classroom.

Throughout the school year, students have made significant progress in their social-emotional learning (SEL). Through intentional learning experiences and the dedication of students, staff and families, students have developed a stronger understanding of their own identities and an increased ability to recognize and understand their emotions as well as the emotions of others. They have learned strategies to remain calm and regulated when faced with challenges, while also strengthening their communication and problem-solving skills. As a result, students have built more positive and meaningful connections with both peers and staff members, contributing to a greater sense of belonging within the school community. This growth in self-awareness, self-regulation, and relationship-building has not only supported students’ social and emotional well-being but has also been reflected in improved engagement and academic outcomes.

As students continue to develop stronger self-awareness, self-regulation, and positive relationship skills, our next step is to build upon this foundation by increasing our focus on literacy learning. We believe that when students are able to recognize and manage their emotions, solve problems effectively, and engage positively with others, they are better positioned to focus on learning and achieve academic success. While maintaining our commitment to Social-Emotional Learning through regular school-wide assemblies, classroom activities, SEL programs, and community-building opportunities, we will increasingly emphasize literacy development across all grade levels. This focus is particularly important in our diverse school community, where many students are learning English as an additional language. By continuing to nurture a caring, supportive environment while strengthening students’ literacy skills and understanding, we aim to ensure that all learners have the confidence, communication skills, and academic foundation needed to thrive both in school and beyond.
