OUR CONTEXT

École Sunrise Ridge is a vibrant and inclusive Kindergarten to Grade 7 learning community committed to ensuring that every student feels valued, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential. Situated within the Surrey School District, our school serves a diverse population of learners and families who bring a rich variety of experiences, cultures, languages, and perspectives to our community. Through strong relationships, high expectations, and a shared commitment to student success, we strive to create a safe, caring, and welcoming environment where all learners can thrive.

At École Sunrise Ridge, we believe that academic achievement, well-being, and belonging are deeply interconnected. Our staff works collaboratively to provide engaging, responsive, and student-centered learning experiences that promote curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and resilience. We are committed to fostering the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of every child while nurturing a growth mindset and a lifelong love of learning.

As a school community, we value respect, responsibility, and resilience. These values guide our decisions, shape our interactions, and support the development of compassionate, engaged citizens. Through inclusive practices, meaningful collaboration with families, and partnerships with community organizations, we work together to create learning opportunities that reflect both student strengths and emerging needs.

Together, our families, PAC, staff, and students share a collective commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment where every learner can succeed. These strong partnerships are fundamental to our school community and are a key factor in fostering student achievement, well-being, and a sense of belonging at École Sunrise Ridge. One of our PAC's current goals is to raise funds and secure grants to create a more accessible and inclusive playground for students of all abilities.

Our school plan is grounded in a commitment to continuous improvement and reflects our ongoing efforts to support student learning, equity, and well-being. Guided by evidence, student voice, and collaborative inquiry, we remain focused on creating conditions in which every learner experiences success, develops a strong sense of identity and belonging, and is prepared to contribute positively to an ever-changing world. We respectfully acknowledge that École Sunrise Ridge is located on the traditional, unceded, and shared territories of the Katzie, Kwantlen, and Semiahmoo First Nations and are committed to advancing reconciliation through our learning and relationships.

OUR LEARNERS

École Sunrise Ridge is home to approximately 360 learners from Kindergarten to Grade 7, representing a diverse and vibrant school community. Our students bring a wide range of cultural backgrounds, languages, lived experiences, strengths, and interests that enrich learning and contribute to a strong sense of belonging within our school. As a District Late French Immersion site, we also welcome students from across Surrey in Grades 6 and 7, further enhancing the diversity and richness of our learning environment.

Our learner population reflects the strengths and opportunities found within a growing and multicultural community. Students arrive with varying academic, social-emotional, and linguistic needs, requiring responsive and inclusive practices that ensure all learners can access meaningful learning opportunities. We are committed to creating equitable pathways to success by providing targeted support, enrichment opportunities, and learning experiences that recognize and honour student identity, voice, and agency.

At École Sunrise Ridge, we recognize that each learner brings unique gifts and potential. Our students demonstrate curiosity, creativity, compassion, and resilience as they engage in academic learning, extracurricular opportunities, leadership experiences, and community-building activities. Through collaborative learning, inquiry, and relationship-focused practices, we strive to empower every learner to develop confidence, a positive sense of self, and the skills needed to thrive both within and beyond the classroom.

As our school continues to evolve, understanding the strengths and needs of our 360 learners remains central to our planning. Their voices, experiences, and aspirations inform our goals and guide our work toward improving student achievement, well-being, and belonging for all.

OUR FOCUS

At École Sunrise Ridge, we recognize that strong reading skills are foundational to success across all areas of learning. Reading proficiency supports students in developing critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and lifelong learning skills. Through the analysis of classroom-based assessments, school-wide data, and teacher observations, we have identified reading development as a key area of focus within our school plan.

Our goal is to increase students' reading achievement by strengthening foundational literacy skills, improving reading comprehension, and fostering a love of reading. We are committed to ensuring that all learners develop the confidence and strategies needed to engage with increasingly complex texts and to access learning across the curriculum.

To support this goal, staff will engage in collaborative inquiry and professional learning focused on evidence-based literacy practices. Teachers will use ongoing assessment to identify student strengths and areas for growth, provide targeted instruction, and monitor progress over time. A particular emphasis will be placed on explicit instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies, while also creating opportunities for meaningful discussion and engagement with diverse texts.

Recognizing that literacy development occurs within a community of learners, we will continue to strengthen partnerships with families by providing resources and strategies that support reading at home. We will also work to create rich literacy environments throughout the school that encourage curiosity, student choice, and a positive reading identity.

Success will be measured through improved student achievement data, increased student confidence and engagement in reading, and evidence that learners are applying effective reading strategies independently across a variety of contexts. Through our collective efforts, we aim to ensure that every student leaves École Sunrise Ridge with the literacy skills necessary to thrive academically and personally.

OUR NEXT STEPS

To support our goal of increasing reading skills for all learners, staff will continue to work collaboratively to implement evidence-based literacy practices and monitor student progress throughout the school year. Our next steps include:

  • Strengthening school-wide reading instruction through consistent use of high-impact literacy strategies across all grade levels.
  • Continuing to collect and analyze assessment data to identify student needs, monitor growth, and inform instructional planning.
  • Providing targeted interventions and small-group instruction for students requiring additional support in foundational literacy skills and reading comprehension.
  • Expanding opportunities for guided reading, independent reading, and meaningful discussions about texts to increase engagement and deepen comprehension.
  • Building students' vocabulary and oral language skills through purposeful classroom activities and cross-curricular learning experiences.
  • Supporting teacher professional learning in the areas of structured literacy, reading assessment, and differentiated instruction.
  • Increasing access to diverse, culturally responsive, and high-interest texts that reflect the identities, experiences, and perspectives of our learners.
  • Strengthening home-school partnerships by sharing reading strategies, resources, and opportunities that families can use to support literacy development at home.
  • Encouraging student voice and choice in reading to foster positive reading identities and a lifelong love of literacy.

Through these actions, we aim to ensure that every learner continues to make measurable growth in reading while developing the confidence, skills, and motivation needed to be successful readers both in school and beyond.
