Creekside Elementary 24-25

OUR CONTEXT

Creekside Elementary officially opened in April of 1999, in a residential neighborhood in the City Center area of Surrey located on the traditional, unceded and shared territories of Coast Salish peoples: Katzie, Kwantlen and Semiahmoo First Nations. There are approximately 300 students enrolled in fourteen divisions, one of which is the District Intensive Literacy Program for students in Grades 4/5/6.

The parent community is supportive of the school and are actively involved in PAC and school events. Our staff works hard to provide our students with opportunities and experiences to enhance their literacy skills. For example, we had a reading event on Valentine’s Day for families to come into the classrooms to promote the "Love of Reading".  In our monthly newsletter, we share a word of the month to build vocabulary to support literacy. The school held a book fair this spring titled, On the High Seas, where books were the treasure. Another literacy event is Camp Read S’more . This event takes place in June and is a wrap up event of the year where the gym is transformed to a sky horizon with twinkling lights emulating a camping experience where families and their children read by flashlights.

Many of our families speak a language other than English at home.   Literacy is a fundamental life skill. It is the ability to read, write, and speak to communicate effectively with others and make sense of the world.

Our school goal is to develop and enhance literacy skills.
